Legend has it that in 1814 Steven Ferguson, an adventurer from Franklin County, was thrown from his steed and carved his epithet on this rock while dying alone in the wilderness along Piney Creek. This has never been confirmed. The rock was moved to Bero Avenue in the late 1970s after city crews building a sanitation plant nearly destroyed it.

I'll play the devil's advocate. So if this ghostly woodsman were dying, is this what he would type? Or was this a bored hunter? The question has been posed.

The question HAS been posed many times over the last century. Was it a dying explorer? Was it a bored huntsman?

I'm not sure how deep the rock goes. It's simply resting on the ground to which it was rescued. As shown in this photo, from just-north of west to just-south of east, it's four-foot. Had the tip of the rock to the south remained, it might had been seven-foot long.
